De Culturele Stelling van Amsterdam [2018/NL]
De Culturele Stelling van Amsterdam is een verdedigingslinie in en rond de stad waarin onafhankelijke creatieve initiatieven, zelfstandige woon-werkpanden en vrije culturele ruimten zich hebben verenigd sinds 2012.
Amsterdam heeft van oudsher een reputatie als ‘vrije stad’ en ‘veilige haven’ voor kritische geesten, kunstenaars en vrijbuiters. Zij brengen vernieuwing, cultuur en avontuur in de stad en hebben sinds de jaren zestig overal ongebruikte terreinen, leegstaande en afgedankte gebouwen nieuw leven ingeblazen.
Zo is een stevig cordon gelegd van betaalbare creatieve werkterreinen waar kunstenaars en eigenzinnige geesten niet alleen experimenteren en produceren maar ook met toegankelijke programmering naar buiten treden.
Maar de positie en betaalbaarheid van deze vrije culturele ruimten staan onder druk. Snel stijgende grondprijzen en mondiale geldstromen dreigen Amsterdam mee te sleuren in een kolk van speculatief gewin en eenzijdige commercie. De vrije markt produceert een harde tweedeling tussen arm en rijk, chique en sjofel. Onafhankelijke creatieve initiatieven liggen onder vuur.
Zoals de Stelling van Amsterdam ooit de stad met een ring van forten en verdedigingswerken moest vrijwaren van ongewenste indringers, werpt de Culturele Stelling nu een dam op tegen afbraak en verdringing van gevestigde culturele vrijplaatsen en bied ze bescherming en kansen aan veelbelovende nieuwe initiatieven. De Culturele Stelling van Amsterdam maakt al een decennia lang verborgen kracht van de stad zichtbaar.
De lange Amsterdamse traditie van tegencultuur met haar rafelranden en eigenwijsheid is het niet alleen waard krachtig te verdedigen, maar is ook onmisbaar in het belang van de stad en haar cultuur als geheel.

Oorlog is in strijd met alles waar kunst en cultuur voor staat! De Culturele Stelling Amsterdam is solidair met alle onderdrukte kunstenaars van dictatoriale regimes. N.a.v. de oorlog in de Oekraïne steunt de CSA de Oekraïnse kunstenaars door het beschikbaar stellen van woon- en werkruimte. Diverse CSA panden waaronder Tetterode, het Domijn, Plantagedok, WG, en Nieuw en Meer hebben concreet actie ondernomen en herbergen al vluchtelingen in hun panden.

Na 10 jaar lobbyen als Culturele Stelling voor het behouden en creëren van vrije ruimte in Amsterdam via politiek debat, het in kaart brengen van de culturele plekken en het bevorderen van solidariteit tussen deze culturele haarden gaan we ons de komende 10 jaar nog meer toeleggen op het zichtbaar maken van dit ONBETAALBAAR KAPITAAL: wat er allemaal word gemaakt, bedacht en gevierd laten zien aan alle Amsterdammers. Met 3 jaarlijks terugkerende projecten zetten wij de makers in het voetlicht: Het Kunst Corso in de zomer, Beeld <en> Storm in de koude winter en Studio Ik het hele jaar door.
The Cultural Defense Line of Amsterdam [2018/EN]
The Cultural Defense Line of Amsterdam is a protective ring in and around the city in which independent creative initiatives, independent live-work premises and free cultural spaces are united since 2012.
Amsterdam has long held a reputation as a “free city” and “safe haven” for critical thinkers, artists and free spirits. They bring renewal, culture and adventure to the city and have since the 1960s revitalized unused zones and vacant and abandoned buildings throughout the city.
In this way a solid cordon of affordable creative living and working spaces has been laid where artists and idiosyncratic spirits not only experiment and produce but also open to the public with accessible programming.
But the position and affordability of these free cultural spaces are under increasing pressure. Rapidly rising land prices and global financial flows threaten to drag Amsterdam into a vortex of speculative gain and unilateral commerce. The free market produces a hard dichotomy between rich and poor, chic and shabby. Independent creative initiatives are under attack.
Just as the Defense Line of Amsterdam once had to protect the city with a ring of forts and defenses from unwanted intruders, the Cultural Defense Line now erects a barrier against the demolition and displacement of established cultural spaces and offers protection and opportunity to promising new initiatives.
The Cultural Defense Line of Amsterdam reveals a powerful side of the city that has been hidden for decades. The long Amsterdam tradition of counterculture with its fringes and hard is not only worth vigorous defense, it is also indispensable in the interest of the city and its culture as a whole.

War is contrary to everything that art and culture stand for! The Cultural Defense Line Amsterdam stands in solidarity with all oppressed artists of dictatorial regimes. N.a. the war in the Ukraine, the CSA supports Ukrainian artists by providing living and working space. Various CSA buildings including Tetterode, Het Domijn, WG, Plantagedok and Nieuw en Meer have taken concrete action and are already hosting refugees in their buildings.
